Scottish & Southern Energy join in with the huge price rises

Leading Business Energy Suppliers, SSE are now the 3rd of the Big Six Energy suppliers to announce an increase in household gas and electricity prices, affecting around 5.2 million electricity and around 3.6 million gas customers.  From 14th September 2011 there will be an average increase of 11% for electricity and an average increase for gas by 18%

Fixed price plans will not be affected.

SSE became the first supplier to state that they will not implement another household energy price increase before 1st August 2012, although they do say that if there were a “sustained” fall in wholesale energy costs then costs may be reduced.

This price rise has been attributed to three factors by SSE:

  • a 14% higher distribution cost to use the energy networks
  • an 11% increase in the cost of mandatory environmental and social schemes that all suppliers are required to fund
  • a huge rise in the cost of wholesale energy prices, caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the political problems in the Middle East

The new prices are updated at and are shown in current and future tariff options.

This now just leaves three of the Big Six to increase their prices: E.ON Energy, Npower and EDF Energy. Customers should be aware that non- fixed tariffs from these suppliers may be increased in the near future.
