What is Digital Inclusion?

digital-inclusionDigital Inclusion is making sure Digital Services such as the internet, are available to everybody.

For the current changes to the Benefits System; Universal Credit is being introduced. This will replace many current benefits including Housing Benefit and Job Seekers Allowance. The Government want around 80% of applications for Universal Credit to be online by 2017. However it is thought that out of the 8.7 million adults living in social housing, 4.1 million have never been online.

Why is Digital Inclusion So Important?

Education and Life Chances

Home access to a computer and the internet can improve children’s academic performance. If the 1.6 million children who live in families who do not have access to the internet got online at home, it could boost their total lifetime earnings by over £10 billion

Employment and Skills

It is estimated that between 75% and 90% of jobs now require at least some computer use. Being online also gives people more opportunity to search and apply for jobs

Saving Money

Offline households are missing out on around £560 worth of savings each year because they do not have access to the internet. They can make these savings through shopping, paying bills online and also using cashback sites for purchases.
